This is a rewritten/ported version of Doukutsu Monogatari, also known as Cave Story, a cult indie game developed and released by Japanese developer Daisuke Amaya (Pixel) in 2004. This platformer adventure game blends metroidvania, RPG, and shooter elements, offering a deep story, charismatic characters, and engaging gameplay.
The game begins with a silent, amnesiac protagonist waking up in a mysterious underground cave. He discovers a village of intelligent rabbit-like creatures called Mimiga, who are threatened by a mad Doctor. The Doctor plans to use an energy stone called the "Demon Crown" to create an army of mutants and conquer the world. The hero must uncover his identity, reveal the cave's secrets, and save the Mimiga from impending doom.
Cave Story features nonlinear gameplay with exploration of vast, interconnected locations. Players collect various weapons, each with unique traits that can be upgraded by gaining experience from defeated enemies. Health and save mechanics require caution and strategy. The game includes challenging boss battles that demand learning attack patterns and applying suitable tactics.
Ported to numerous platforms, Cave Story is considered one of the most influential indie games, inspiring countless developers. It proved that solo-developed games can be as deep and captivating as major studio projects.
The Mega Drive port is being developed by Andrew DeRosier. The ROM should work on any revision console or emulator. The main story is "finished," with only minor details and bug fixes remaining.
