Im paying attention, i just do not exactly understand how to use furnace but been messing with it for a little while today, i have been playing guitar for about 16 years now so i have interest in this, im just going into this blind

I know about the XGM driver, and the recent mode 1 and msu support for genesis

In terms of the original driver i think the only other game that uses it is new zealand story

Ill try to keep this simple but heres the overall goal, this port is very watered down compared to the arcade version, starting with audio, there are many things id love to see improved, but i just wanted to start on one thing and go from there

I think personally before any music is messed with

The sound effects themselves is a baby step towards making it arcade perfect

Nobody has hacked this game as far as i know of, the real goal in mind would be to get this way closer to arcade perfect

In terms of redoing the music, no one in the YM2612 community has really taken a notice to it, i either get no reply or there is not enough interest in the game itself, Odd...as a musician, some of the guitar samples are really cool mixed in with the Seta soundchip, never heard anything like that from an arcade game from 89

Genesis version im sure as you all know not only draws back the music quality but the game itself is very watered down, no 2 players, colors are severely drawn

So lets start with the basics, how much would someone want to implement the missing sound effects?

@bgr

Not really sure, what would somebody usually want for such a task

Basically involving accessing sound driver stuff which is not easy by any means

Hey im in America cant do squat but just curious to know how much somebody would do this for

Calibur .50
Hack: Add and change sound effects to arcade version
Source: my back up of the samples and sound effects, not sure if all effects are there but the introduction is definitely there

This game needs a lot of improvements this port is trash compared to the arcade version

Sorry not exact on specific sprite size but the beta prototype rom available uses bigger sprites, i think size difference is almost 1mb bigger between prototype and final

6
Hello everyone i have recently picked up romhacking, specifically interested in what controls 256 and 320 mode or H32/H40 mode, on the game primal rage, offset 45C controls display for 256 mode for the in game rounds/fights, if changed from 8C00 to 8C81, the display will become wider and so far nothing is broken except the hud is off centered now

This is a baby step to making this game better, as i mentioned above, the beta/prototype sprites were more arcade like because they were double the size of the final release

bgr, он про другую игру. я ему сказал Таю написать. видимо Тай так и не вышел из сумрака :(

Unfortunately he has not reached out

How much for a wild goose chase changing VDP writes to get one genesis game from H32 to H40

Been spending all day on one game
GROWL!

9
I accidentally posted this in the wrong topic but i have been searching 3 days straight on what opcode controls the VDP write for H32, im currently looking into street fighter 2 and cannot find a vdp write with 8C00, theres only a small handful of VDP writes to 00C00004, so i should be able to narrow it down but nothing is exactly static and uses long addresses like its using DMA for Vram

10
Thank you!

Usually what im finding on some roms are dynamic writes before it writes to C00004

Im learning how to change H32 and H40 modes, im honestly a little stumped where im at

The example im using is saturday night slam masters, uses H40 and switches to H32, i cannot find the offset where it switches, the vdp debugger on regen will not show offset but the value (0x00) the only other context i have is at offset 555A (33 FC 8C 00 00 C0 00 04) grok is telling me this is the switch to H40 but the breakpoint happens after the licensed by capcom credits, and that is set already to H32

I would love to learn more about this, ive been at this for hours, im not giving up

12
A challenge for a veteran romhacker, primal rages prototype for genesis uses sprites 2x the size of the final retail version, much closer to the arcade, anyway to add those sprites back in? Also this game stupidly uses 256 mode and ive been looking into the code trying to switch it to 320 or remove the borders

13
How would you convert an nes game to mega drive?

Didnt someone do this before with super mario bros?

14
Ive decided to try taking this on, i have some arcade samples and sound effects that i ripped from the arcade game, im very new to this im not even there yet

On the other hand, i wanna start simple, all i want to do is change player lives in the option menu to 99, been trying all day to find where that line of code would be in a hex editor

Im getting somewhere....changed 06 to 63 on address 4BE4 i think, now the counter will move past 5, problem? Once its past 9, it starts showing alphabetical letters and symbols, but the actual in game counter displays correctly

If anything i remember fondly about robocop vs terminator,  the camera was pretty jarring at times when you turned left and right

I dont know if this is okay to post this here but i thought for newbies, this info could help

If anyone is interested, last night i figured out how to rip audio/sound effects from MAME arcade roms

1. Find a rom you want
2. Open the zip file, and copy the files to another folder or desktop
3. Run audacity, go to file, import, raw data
4. One of the files inside the mame rom is your audio, this may take some guesswork but you should find it by just importing it and listening to the audio
5. When picking the file, audacity will let you set Hz rate and bit rate, set it to 8Khz 8 bit, some people think this option is for hz sample rate, its not, this will adjust Hz/how fast the audio plays
6. Once you find the right file and the right speed, either save it as a WAV file, or splice up the audio into seperate tracks

Heres the audio i extracted from an arcade game called Calibur .50

https://youtu.be/GjTDTiAK9VI?si=tpzAFjLLbNHs1Wp-

17
The rom file i found was 4.2mb, and just for shit and giggles, i took the infinity and beyond sound bit off of YT, and downsampled it to 8 bit at 22khz

It did bring the file size down quite a bit, but your right, it still would exceed the rom limit, that one sound bit is 80kb

18
Hmmmmm, is this a limitation of the rom file itself or is it just exceeding a 4mb cart?

19
Okay interesting, so you could just take the sound effects and voice clips, use better samples, and then just add them to the rom itself

Also two games that i think would highly benefit from CD audio is Vectorman and Comix Zone, sega reeleased an album in the 90s part of a brand called sega tunes, 5 games including vectorman and comix zone got there own special soundtracks

20
Bummer

Just thought id ask what is possible with mode 1

21
Was about to chime in on this, from what i gather from mode 1, it is completely possible to add/enhance sound effects, in the case of toy story, couldn't someone just take the original audio from the movie, edit it in audacity and then replace the sound files?

This is unrelated to audio but sega cd was supposed to be about full motion video, have we found a way to essentially do what MSU on snes can do with adding videos?

22
I got lots of ideas for genesis games, ideas for improvements/bug fixes

Besides 2 player modes heres a few worth taking a look at

Forgotten Worlds
- When you use a 6 button Controller, the game will not work, it will boot to the intro, and then randomly NOPE game over, tried all the mode tricks, does not work, complete bullshit that this is a problem

Lethal Enforcers
- Did you know that you cannot use a Sega Menacer on lethal enforcers and some other light gun games? How about a fix for that? Light gun game hacks do not exist, we have accessories that very few games actually use which leads me to the next idea

T2 The Arcade Game
- this one will let you use a sega menacer but not a konami justifier, if possible, create a patch that would allow full compatibility between both accessories being used on light gun games that are incompatible, once again this is really stupid that this was never resolved in anyway back then

Steel Talons
- Holy shit what a choppy mess this game is, you wanna talk about optimization of code, road rash had some slowdown, this is painful compared to that, funny thing, i bet you the console could have easily handled this

23
Final fight has a two player hack, it was removed from RHDN but its still out there in some places, On romhack plaza, super metroid kind of got a two player hack where the 2nd player can control weapons, and im pretty sure i saw on RHDN forums a two player hack for donkey kong country but its not exactly a  stable release

Jungle strike for two is a neat idea

You know how many arcade conversions are missing two player options ....quite a few

Twin cobra, growl, mercs, all of these were either 2 player or 3 player in the arcade

24
Alright not sure if this is possible and I probably should start a topic about this but i wanted to know if anybody has attempted to make two player hacks for certain sega genesis games? I see two player hacks for NES and Surprisingly SNES, but not genesis

25
Person who lives in the west

I just wanna play a game like contra and blow shit up

26
Thanks ill look around, i did find the sound driver the genesis version used

Its called Dragnet/Kazuo Okabayashi

27
Is it possible to convert songs from calibur 50 that use the Seta X1-010 to Ym2612 and then replace the original genesis versions music, the genesis versions Soundtrack sucks so hard compared to the arcade

28
Is it possible to add 2 player to mercs or calibur .50?

Top Gear 2 - Mode 1 (Amiga CD 32 music)

Tried it on real hardware without the audio files, it worked but both lotus turbo and top gear seem to have some weird issues on emulation and real hardware

Top gear 2: when you crash into barriers, the map screen pops in, this was tested on my model 1, game runs very smooth btw

Lotus turbo challenge: map screen pops in when racing, tested on genesis plus GX, with no overclock and overclock

29
Twin Cobra - Sega Genesis
Free Play Option that allows you to respawn instantly
Infinite Continues in the option

Let me know what that will cost me

Would love to see the same type of treatment to other shmups on genesis

30
Thank you for responding so quickly, unfortunately i cannot test this on real hardware due to not having a sega CD or mega SD/Everdrive Pro,

Edmo has expressed interest in seeing if someone will disassemble the code for the sound driver used for this game to see if its possible to replace the audio or use PCM files

Also, i dont know who had that made the overclock mod for lotus turbo challenge, there seems to be a bug on that hack that makes the map screen flash in game while driving
