Once after the 0.70 version, byuu (the emulator's author), began to gradually turn bsnes into higan, starting by throwing out half of the functionality and support for standard ROMs and archives. In fact, bsnes 0.71 can be considered the first version of higan. Later bsnes was again spun off as a separate project from higan.
